Senator Lindsey Graham, RS.C., criticized the proposed defense spending in the debt ceiling deal on Sunday, saying it would be a “joke” to adopt what he calls President Biden’s defense budget.
“We want to raise the debt ceiling, but it would be irresponsible not to do it,” Graham told Shannon Bream on Fox News Sunday. “I want to control my spending, I want to scale the IRS down, I want my unused coronavirus money back. Adopt a budget and call it a success.”
Graham’s comments came after Biden and Republican chairman Kevin McCarthy (California) reached a broad agreement late Saturday to raise the debt ceiling for two years and apply the new cap to federal spending. Issued despite an agreement being reached. Mr. Graham pushed back Mr. McCarthy, saying the defense budget was fully funded, and reiterated that if he sent the defense budget bill to the Senate, he would “would cause trouble” for Congress.
“I mean, the Biden defense budget used to be a joke, but if we adopt it as a Republican, it will do a lot of damage to the Ronald Reagan party. The biggest winner for the Biden defense budget is China.” ‘ said.
He wants to raise the debt ceiling, but adds that he will not sacrifice the military. She said she would not be “threatened” by June 5, the deadline set by Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen to avoid a national default.
“The debt ceiling should be raised, but not at the cost of undermining the military’s ability to defend the country. Subinflationary spending does not adequately fund the military,” he said.
