A trendy bathhouse in Brooklyn made headlines this week by bragging about using bitcoin mining to generate pool heat.
“Did you know our pools are heated with bitcoin mining by-products?” Williamsburg Bathhouse Post to Instagramattracting hundreds more comments than usual.
The video explains in several steps how the futuristic process of mining cryptocurrencies takes place.
“Step 1: Mine Bitcoin. Mining uses electricity for computing power and generates heat as a by-product,” says the narrator.
Bitcoin mining involves solving complex math problems using specialized software that validates transactions in the currency, according to financial services firm Bankrate.
“Step 2: The heat generated by the miners is sent to the heat exchanger to heat the pool. Step 3: Enjoy the hot pool while supporting the Bitcoin network,” the video continues. “The pool absorbs heat and circulates cool liquids to the miners.”
Critics say Bitcoin mining is energy intensive and bad for the environment.
One user commented, “This made me not really like Bathhouse.” “Now my concern is who is mining this cryptocurrency, who is profiting from it, and whether I support it.”
“I don’t stand for that,” said another.
Others applauded this innovation.
One person wrote, “This is amazing.” “I rarely leave Manhattan, but I just booked a massage.”
The company remains passionate about its business model.
“Instead of using electricity to heat an electric pool, we use electricity to move the miners,” says Bathhouse co-founder Jason Goodman told Yahoo’s In The Know.
“The net result is that we’re supplying the miners with energy they already had to buy to heat the pool, so it’s essentially energy neutral,” Goodman continued. “So we can use this power in a way ‘twice’ … supporting the Bitcoin network and immersing ourselves in fun engineering projects while recovering much of our energy costs. ”
