A court of appeals has issued an interim order suspending the implementation of the Council of Ministers’ decision to lower the retirement age for government nurses to 60 years.
The Court of Appeal bench, composed of Chief Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne and A. Marikkar Justices, issued the order after considering petitions filed by groups including the Public Service United Nurses’ Union.
Petitioners argue that a recent decision by the Council of Ministers to require nurses to retire at age 60 is illegal, indicating that nurses can remain employed until age 63.
Having considered the facts presented, the Court of Appeals issued this interim order, which it said remains in effect until the hearing of the petition is closed.
Minister of Public Administration Dinesh Gunawardena, Chief Executive, Cabinet Members, Presidential Secretary and Attorney General have been named as respondents to the petition.
