A woman from Haskell tried to make some extra money during her vacation, but it cost a lot of money and left her thousands of dollars in debt.
She was involved in a wreck while driving for DoorDash, but her insurance didn’t cover the damage, she said.
Carrie Longey liked the idea of driving with DoorDash. It fit in well with her other work and her schedule as a mother. Now, in the wake of her accident, she is encouraging other rideshare drivers to double-check their insurance policies.
For Longyi, the convenience of being a rideshare driver made sense.
“The appeal for me was that it was easy to get started. I just needed a little bit to get by, and it worked,” Longy said.
After several weeks as a driver, Longay was involved in an accident while on duty.
She said that after she told the insurance company honestly that she worked, her claim was denied and she ended up paying $25,000 and a car she could no longer drive.
“That’s not true. Wait a minute. I feel like there’s something wrong here. If it was so important to have special insurance, no one would mention that they had special insurance.” We don’t have one,” Longy said.
AAA Oklahoma said that while rideshare companies are required to provide insurance to their drivers, it doesn’t always cover them.
AAA’s Riley Fletcher says rideshare drivers should discuss their options with their insurance company before setting off.
“You shouldn’t rely on that insurance just to get there and back, because your rideshare insurance may not cover you if you’re not actively participating in the rideshare transaction at the time and if you don’t have a passenger in your car. ” Fletcher said.
In addition to worrying that bankruptcy is her only option, Longy said she also worries about supporting her 11-year-old daughter, Samantha.
“I’m going to do whatever it takes to save this situation. I don’t want to go bankrupt. I want to own a house someday. I want a place where my daughter can feel safe,” Longy said.
