Needham, Massachusetts, April 15, 2024 – According to preliminary data from International Data Corporation (IDC) Worldwide quarterly cell phone tracker , Global smartphone shipments in the first quarter of 2024 (Q1 2024) increased by 7.8% year-on-year to 289.4 million units. The industry is not completely out of the woods as macroeconomic challenges remain in many markets, but this marks the third consecutive quarter of increased shipments and the recovery is on track. This is a strong indicator of the current status of the company.
“As expected, the smartphone recovery continues to advance, with market optimism gradually increasing among top brands,” said Ryan Rees, group vice president of Worldwide Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers at IDC. “There is,” he said. “While Apple succeeded in taking the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung managed to reaffirm its position as the leading smartphone provider in the first quarter. Although expected to maintain its position, the resurgence of smartphones will see both OEMs seek areas to expand and diversify, with notable gains from China’s Huawei, as well as Xiaomi, Transsion, OPPO/OnePlus, and vivo. “As the recovery progresses, the top companies will likely gain market share. Smaller brands will struggle to position themselves.”
“The smartphone market has emerged from the turbulence of the past two years stronger and changing.” Nabila Popal, Research Director for IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team. “First, value and average selling price (ASP) growth continues as consumers choose more expensive devices knowing they will own them longer. Second, the top five companies continue to grow in value and average selling price (ASP). Xiaomi has bounced back strongly from the significant decline experienced over the past two years, while Transsion, in contrast, has been active in international markets as market players adjust their strategies in a possibly post-recovery world. The top two companies both had negative growth rates in the first quarter, but overall Samsung appears to be in a stronger position than it has been in recent quarters. is.”
