Wausau Pilot and Review
Yauo Yang is a pastor who was born in a refugee camp in Thailand and moved with his family to Wausau in the 1980s. Veterans of the Wisconsin National Guard have been active in serving their communities for many years. This time, he took action after learning that families in both districts were struggling to pay for student meals.
“In fact, there is over $20,000 in student lunch debt between the Wausau School District and the DC Everest School District,” Yang wrote on his fundraising page.
Yang said she too grew up in poverty and understands how difficult it is for families to feed their children.
April is Global Pay It Forward Month, a global celebration of kindness that encourages people to take part in small acts of generosity that lead to positive change. Yang said this message is at the heart of both districts’ efforts to pay down student lunch debt, with a goal of $20,000.
As of Monday, Yang has raised more than $16,000 so far through his GoFundMe page.
“I believe it is important for children to be able to go to school, have a decent meal, and learn,” Yang wrote. “I believe Central Wisconsin is a giving community, and students in our school district who owe school lunch debt need our assistance more than ever during this difficult economic climate.” We believe your donation to help the children in our community will be greatly appreciated by hundreds of students and their families.”
