More than $900 million in rebates will be paid out to Virginia taxpayers in the coming weeks, state officials said.
The tax refund was included in a long-overdue budget bill passed by the Virginia General Assembly in September.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin said the rebates are “an important step toward the holiday season to help Virginians keep more of their hard-earned money on gas, groceries and essentials.”

Who is eligible for a 2023 Virginia tax refund?
If you paid your taxes late in 2022, you can get a refund. According to the Virginia Department of Taxation, the rebate is based on an individual’s tax liability (the amount of taxes owed on their taxable income for the year) minus any credits, deductions, or subtractions.

Those who have not yet filed their 2022 income taxes have until November 1st to do so and be eligible for a refund. If he has already filed his 2022 taxes, you don’t need to do anything.

How much will appear on my tax refund check?
Individual applicants will receive up to $200 and couples filing jointly will receive up to $400.
The exact amount depends on whether you already owe money to the government. If you owe more than the rebate amount, the Virginia Department of Taxation will send you a letter explaining how the rebate will be used for that debt, the agency said.

How can I receive my tax refund?
If you received a tax refund by direct deposit this year, you will likely receive your refund directly into the same bank account with the caption “VA DEPT TAXATION VATXREBATE,” the department said.
All other eligible taxpayers will receive their rebate by mailing a paper check. Look for an envelope marked “Virginia Department of Taxation.”
If you have moved within the past year and have a current forwarding order with the U.S. Post Office, your check will be forwarded to your new address.
When will I receive my tax refund check?
Yonkin said in a statement Tuesday night that some tax refunds could be issued as early as this week.
Most rebates are expected to be issued by early November, the tax department and Youngkin said. The state issues rebates in the order taxpayers file their returns.
“If you are eligible and paid your taxes before July 1, you must issue your rebate by November 30,” the Virginia Department of Taxation says online.
