The Kansas City Chiefs All-Pro tight end, currently in his 11th NFL season, revealed in a recent interview that he has been contemplating retirement “more than anyone could ever imagine.” wall street journal.
Since becoming a starter in 2014, Kelce, 34, has missed just four of 155 regular-season games and has made 18 more playoff appearances, or one more season in total, during that time. But despite his durability, he has undergone nearly a dozen surgeries.
“That’s the one thing I’ve never been very open about,” Kelce said. He takes pride in always being available for his teammates. “Pain. A lingering injury. I’ve had 10 surgeries and I still feel that pain every time.”
A knee injury caused him to miss this season’s regular season opener against the Detroit Lions on September 7. But he hasn’t missed a game since then, including Monday night’s much-hyped Super Bowl 57 rematch between the Philadelphia Eagles and his younger brother Jason Kelce. Kelce had 57 receptions for 597 yards in Monday’s game, on track for his eighth consecutive 1,000-yard receiving season. No other tight end in NFL history has done it more than three times in a row. Kelce has 871 catches, 10,941 yards and 73 TDs in his career, all near the top of the all-time tight end leaderboard. During his postseason, Kelce had 133 grabs, 1,548 yards, and 16 scores, all of which are second only to Hall of Fame wideout Jerry Rice at his position.
Kelsey went from being an NFL star to pop stardom this year after forging a relationship with singer Taylor Swift. He has already branched out into media, appearing with his brother on the podcast “New Heights,” appearing in a series of commercials and appearing on “Saturday Night Live.”
Kelce was asked during minicamp last June how long he planned to continue playing.
“Until the wheels come off, baby,” he said at the time. “I love this game so much that I know I’ll miss it when I’m done playing it.
“But now I’m in this building wanting to win football games, dude.”
