RTÉ has been a great opportunity for me. I want to thank you for giving me the opportunity to comment on the sport I love, filled with people I admire. Many of them are my friends.
We have to thank the late Tim O’Connor. 40 years is a long time no matter what I do, but every day was fun…
I hope everyone who works for RTÉ enjoys it 40 years from now and looks a little shocked 40 years from now! Hot water here and there, but that happens on live TV…
Before I go off-air completely, I want to thank my family. They have always been my great supporters. I’ve enjoyed the success of Rugby and Katie, and Jennifer and Ted, and their involvement as well.
One particular person is my life partner, Helen. She doesn’t know what she would have done without her. Thank you Helen.
Say no more
emotional stuff.
His son Ruby was on Racing TV. After admitting that his father had hinted at his impending retirement, he wished him the best of luck.

Dad hangs up the mic today and has been with RTÉ since 1983 or 1984.
I wouldn’t say he bucked trends, but it was definitely all in his head. It seemed to Dad that he said what he thought, what he said, whatever he thought he would respond.
I am very proud of him and wish him the best of luck…
My father always advised me to get out before I was pushed.
A proud day for the Walsh family.
We wish him all the best for his retirement.
