ROGERS, Arkansas (KNWA/KFTA) — Two state legislative commissions met in Rogers on August 9 to discuss issues surrounding cryptocurrency mining facilities.
The State House and Senate Committees on City, County and Local Affairs have met to specifically discuss the Arkansas Data Center Act of 2023.
The law permits the establishment of data mining centers in Arkansas and specifically protects these centers from “discriminatory industry regulations and taxes.”
State Senator Brian King said the bill was a bad deal for Arkansans because these centers receive more protection than the average operator.
“We have no idea what these crypto mining facilities are doing,” King said. “Certainly pig butchers and FTX and all these things and we’re turning around and regulating stockbrokers and banks and payday financiers to a certain extent. And somehow these cryptocurrencies Miners are escaping whatever they want.”
On August 9, Dr. King proposed an inquiry into repealing the bill. The proposal was rejected.
