According to provisional estimates of life expectancy at age 65 for the three years from 2021 to 2023 published by the National Bureau of Statistics (INE), this value is estimated to be 19.75 years, which corresponds to an increase of 0.14 years (1.68 months) compared to the previous three years (19.61 years from 2020 to 2022).
Based on these data, we can calculate that the retirement age in 2025 will be 66 years and 7 months.
This value is three months higher than the 66 years and four months in 2024, when the retirement age remained unchanged compared to 2023.
In 2023, there was a decrease of three months compared to the age set in 2022, which is unprecedented since retirement age began to be linked to life expectancy.
Both the reduction in 2023 and the age retention in 2024 are associated with a decline in life expectancy due to mortality and morbidity among older people due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Provisional values for life expectancy at age 65, calculated annually by INE, will be published in November and will help determine the normal age for receiving old age pensions, but what is known is not yet known. Incorporates revised estimates of resident population from final 2021 Census results.
