The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) recently updated its online guidance to 2023/24 Winter fuel payment It can be made from Monday 18th September for people over state pension age living in the UK and eligible countries overseas. If you received your payment for winter 2022/23 last year, you do not need to apply again. Application forms will be available online closer to the application start date.
If you are eligible for a winter fuel payment in 2023/24 as part of the UK Government’s new cost of living financial support package, you will also receive additional benefits. £150 or £300 surcharge Regular payments will start from November. This means that eligible households can receive between £250 and £600 to help with heating costs during the cold season.
The DWP confirmed earlier this year that 11.6 million people over State Pension age had received up to £600 in winter fuel and living allowances up to December last year.
The full amount of the winter fuel payment, including living expenses, that pensioners receive this year depends on when they were born and their household situation during the eligibility period.
To be eligible for this year’s Winter Fuel Payment, you must be born on or before 25 September 1957 and live in the UK for at least one day in the week of 18 to 24 September 2023. This is called a “qualifying week.” ‘.
Most people don’t need to apply, as payments are automatic. You will receive a letter in October or November informing you of your winter fuel payment amount. The basic rule of thumb is that households with people between state pension age and her age of 79 will receive £500, and households with people aged 80 and over will receive £600.

If you live alone or if someone you live with is not eligible for winter fuel payments.
Get one of the following:
- £500 if born between 25 September 1943 and 24 September 1957

Your payments may vary if you receive any of the following benefits:
- pension system
- Jobseekers Allowance (JSA) based on income
- Income-related Employment Support Allowance (ESA)

If the above benefits are not available
Receive payment for one of the following:
- £250 if you and the person you live with were both born between 25 September 1943 and 24 September 1957
- £250 if you were born between 25 September 1943 and 24 September 1957 but someone you live with was born before 25 September 1943
- £350 if you were born before 25 September 1943 but someone you live with was born between 25 September 1943 and 24 September 1957
- £300 if you and the person you live with were both born before 25 September 1943
If you and your partner jointly claim any of the above benefits
One of them will receive one of the following payments:
- £500 if both were born between 25 September 1943 and 24 September 1957
- £600 if either or both were born before 25 September 1943
If you obtain any of the benefits listed above (but not as part of a joint claim)
Receive payment for one of the following:
- £500 if born between 25 September 1943 and 24 September 1957
- £600 if born before 25 September 1943
If you live in a care home
If you qualify, you can get one of the following:
- £250 if born between 25 September 1943 and 24 September 1957
- £300 if born before 25 September 1943

Qualifications if you live in a nursing facility
If you live in a care home, you can receive a winter fuel allowance. If both of the following apply, you will not be eligible.
- You can receive pension credits, income support, income-based Jobseeker Allowance (JSA) or income-related Employment Support Allowance (ESA).
- Lived in a care home from June 26, 2023 to September 24, 2023
Who is excluded from the 2023/24 winter fuel payment?
The following cases are not eligible.
- Have been hospitalized for over a year and received free treatment
- It states that a permit is required to enter the UK and that public funds cannot be claimed for the leave granted.
- He was in prison for a week from September 18th to 24th, 2023.
