Mayo forward Doherty announces inter-county retirement

Mayo forward Jason Doherty has announced his retirement from inter-county football.
The Barishur clubman spent 12 years on Mayo’s senior panel, playing 132 games for the greens and reds, going 17-153.
After making his senior championship debut against London in 2011, Doherty went on to win seven Connaught Championship titles, two league titles with the Westerners and an All-Star nomination in 2017. .
The 33-year-old has started three county All-Ireland SFC finals (2012, 2016 and 2017) and came on as a substitute in the 2013 final against Dublin, his last being All-Ireland. Lost in the quarterfinals. He just went to Dub about five weeks ago.
“Playing for Mayo has been a huge honor for me since I first wore the jersey as a Mayo minor in 2007,” Doherty said in a statement released Saturday night.
“I am so grateful for the experiences and memories I have gained over the last 13 years. There have been many ups and downs along the way, but I have now met so many highly motivated, ambitious and talented people who have become lifelong friends. I feel incredibly lucky to have shared a dressing room with.
“There have been many people who have helped me along the way. It includes all my teammates who have motivated me to maximize my efforts to achieve a common goal.

“My wife, Caroline, in particular, made a lot of sacrifices to keep me playing for Mayo for a long time. Without their unquestionable support, it would not have been possible to give football so much time and attention, which I will never forget.
“Mayo’s supporters are great. No matter where you are in Ireland, it’s always been special to run to Mayo’s roar on the field and receive the energy they send from the terraces.”
“I would also like to thank my employer, the Irish Agency for Sustainable Energy, and the various managers over the years who have allowed me to flexibly adjust my working week to accommodate my travel from Dublin to County Mayo for training. think.
