Kansas City, Missouri — Property owners in Jackson County will have more time to challenge large property valuation increases.
The Jackson County Leveling Commission met Friday afternoon and approved plans to extend the deadline to 11:59 p.m. on July 31.
The previous deadline was Monday, July 10th.
The news is good news for hundreds of property owners who still want to appeal, but they need to do so through virtual meetings.
The Jackson County Assessor’s Office announced Friday afternoon that property owners will be closed to file appeals at the Assessor’s Office in downtown Kansas City. Instead, anyone using the location should call (877) 895-9675 to schedule a virtual appointment with the Evaluation Department.You can also do it by Go online and click here.
The Equalization Commission will begin its property valuation appeal hearings on Monday, July 10.
Also scheduled for Monday, Jackson County legislators will discuss an item that would limit an individual’s property tax assessment to 15% of the 2019 tax assessment.
The Jackson County Assessor’s Office said average property valuations were up 30%, but some homeowners said their valuations jumped more than 100%.
In Missouri, evaluations are completed every other year, in odd-numbered years.
Tax authorities, including the school board, fire district, water district, library, city, and other authorities within the county, are responsible for setting and adjusting tax rates.
