Fort Bend County, Texas — Fort Bend Independent School District The school board is scheduled to vote on the superintendent’s resignation on Monday.
Dr. Christy Whitbeck took over the leadership role at FBISD, one of the largest school districts in Texas, in October 2021.
It’s unclear whether Whitbeck suggested he retire or whether he asked her to retire.
If approved at Monday’s board meeting, Whitbeck’s retirement would become effective Dec. 12.
She said she will take on a different role to ensure a “smooth transition to the next superintendent.”
“No matter what the future holds, Fort Bend ISD students, staff, parents and community partners will always be near and dear to my heart,” Whitbeck said in a statement.
The full statement released by FBISD is below:
“My retirement will be voted on by the Board of Directors at its Monday, December 4, 2023, Board meeting.
“If approved, I will step down as superintendent effective December 12 and assume the role of superintendent emeritus to ensure a smooth transition to the next superintendent. My emeritus term will begin in spring 2024. It ends at the end of the semester.”
“The board will also take steps to appoint an interim director.
“It is with a very heavy heart that I make this announcement that I understand that my retirement may be unexpected to many. I am proud of the unprecedented accomplishments we have achieved in Bend ISD, including eliminating a $47 million budget deficit and passing the May 2023 bond election and November 2023 VATRE election. These measures will allow Fort Bend ISD to develop a strong financial and physical infrastructure and ensure that teachers and staff receive needed raises.
