what we found
Deepfake videos like this clip of Yellen are created using artificial intelligence programs that can be used to replace or synthesize faces, voices, and emotional expressions.
The viral video was created using existing video of Yellen’s remarks at a press conference following a bilateral meeting with Vice Premier He Lifeng of the People’s Republic of China on November 10, 2023. The press conference was held in San Francisco, California.
VERIFY used InVid, a video forensics tool, to analyze the keyframes of the viral video and perform a reverse image search of the frames. This way I was able to find the original video posted on. CNBC’s YouTube channel November 10, 2023.
The podium and background are the same in both the original and viral deepfake videos. Yellen wears the same outfit, has the same hairstyle, and the CNBC logo can be seen in both clips.
The obvious sign that a viral video is fake is the audio. The audio heard in the video does not match Yellen’s lip movements, and her expletive-laced remarks at the end of the video make it clear that the video is fake and intended as satire. It is shown in
C-SPAN, which televises federal government minutes and other public affairs content, will also cover Yellen’s remarks from November 2023 onwards. I posted a video on the C-SPAN website.
According to a transcript of the press conference published by C-SPAN and the newspaper, US Treasury, Yellen and Lifeng met for two days in November to discuss economic relations between the United States and China. At no point in her remarks did Yellen use any name-calling, mention cryptocurrencies or discuss regulation of the Bitcoin market.
