Surya Harijan, an elderly woman from Jaligaon, Orissa, traveled many kilometers to reach a bank in search of her monthly payments. Her eldest son works as a migrant worker in another state. She lives with her younger son’s family and he makes a living by herding other people’s cattle.

An elderly woman went to the bank to collect her pension but was sent home without money after being told her thumb did not match the record.
In response to the incident, a State Bank of India (SBI) manager said he was having difficulty withdrawing cash due to a “broken finger” and that the bank was trying to find a solution.
“Her finger is broken so she is having trouble withdrawing money. She was given 3,000 rupees manually by the bank. We will fix the problem soon,” said an SBI manager at the Jharigaon branch. said.
Her village Sarpanch also said they had discussed listing such helpless people in the village and providing them with pensions.
